Why Do We Need Financial Support?Wouldn't it be wonderful if God called, we answered, and we just went? There was a day when this was somewhat possible. A day when you could go and live for a few years off a few thousand dollars of savings. However, the face of missions service has changed since then. Travel is more expensive, more families are going into the field, the tools used in ministry have advanced and are more costly, and the general cost of living in most countries is up. The fact is, missions work, like running a stateside business or church, involves significant investments. There is food, shelter, basic utilities, and clothing. There is transportation to the field and transportation on the field. There is the constantly increasing burden of medical insurance that will cover us in the USA and abroad. And, there are taxes -- lots of them. From a tax prospective, a missionary is like a self employed business owner -- responsible for both sides of the Social Security tax burden. There are general ministry expenses and communications expenses to keep the missionary family and those who support them up to date on their efforts.
