The city of Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East

Pronouncing the name of this city:  It has some sounds that are not in English, that is why the funny spelling.  In English just drop the first “K”.  And the one “v” almost disappears and sounds more like an “f”, which also makes it easier to say.  So say Habarofsk  [ Ha-BAR-ofsk ].  If that is still too hard just say Habarask.  A Russian will still understand it well enough to know which city you mean.

Khabarovsk is located in Russia on the Amur River.  The Amur River serves as the border between Russia and China to the South-west of Khabarovsk.  It is also large enough for major shipping to the Sea of Japan; thus Khabarovsk is an inland shipping port during summer.  The Trans-Siberian railway passes through Khabarovsk to Vladivostok in the south really and toward Moscow far to the west.  It hosts an international airport with direct flights to Seoul (South Korea), Harbin (China), other foreign cities and many cities inside Russia.  So Khabarovsk serves as a transportation hub for the eastern coast of Russia.  Its population is over 600,000.
